Dark Elf Name Generator
This dark elf name generator is built around the Dunmer of the Elder Scrolls games — the ashen-skinned, red-eyed elves of Morrowind and Skyrim — with a Great House or Ashlander clan behind every name. It also covers the wider "dark elf" umbrella: a lighter D&D drow-style mode, a Warhammer-style cold-elf mode, and a generic dark-elf mode for anything in between. Pick your universe, set a House or clan, gender, and role, and roll names built for tabletop characters, original fiction, or a Tamriel-flavored campaign.

"Dark elf" means different things depending on which shelf you're browsing. Tolkien used it for exiled elves who never saw the Two Trees. D&D turned it into drow, a matriarchal Underdark culture built around a spider goddess. Warhammer turned it into raiders from a frozen coast, worse than villains. And the Elder Scrolls turned it into Dunmer — a whole civilization with five ruling Houses, a fallen pantheon, and a homeland made of ash.
This page leans hardest into that last version, because it's the deepest and least covered by other name tools — and because our dedicated Drow Name Generator already owns the D&D angle in depth. Read on for the full breakdown of how each tradition sounds, or scroll straight to the generator above and start rolling.
Who the Dunmer Are
Dunmer — "Dark Elves" in Cyrodilic — are native to Morrowind, the volcanic province in the northeast of the Elder Scrolls continent Tamriel. Their skin runs ash-grey to near black and their eyes carry a faint red glow, a mark lore ties to a curse from the god Boethiah (Azura, in the Tribunal Temple's own telling) laid on their ancestors, the Chimer, after the Chimer broke from their Aldmeri kin. They're proud, long-lived, and — outside the Ashlander tribes — organized almost entirely around House loyalty rather than nation or race alone.
For most of Morrowind's history, the Dunmer answered to their own Tribunal — three living god-kings, Vivec, Almalexia, and Sotha Sil — rather than the wider pantheon other elves worship. That changed after the cataclysmic Red Year destroyed much of Vvardenfell and, in the era Skyrim is set, scattered Dunmer refugees across Tamriel, including the Gray Quarter ghetto in Windhelm.
Dark Elf vs Drow — Which One Do You Mean?
If the search that brought you here was "dark elf" as shorthand for D&D's Underdark elves, you actually want drow. Drow are dark-skinned, white-haired, and matriarchal, ruled by priestesses of a spider goddess in a culture built on betrayal and House rivalry beneath the surface world. Our Drow Name Generator handles that lore in full depth — given names, House names, priestess tone, the whole apostrophe-heavy phonetic system.
Dunmer, by contrast, are the Elder Scrolls' dark elves — a completely different setting, gods, and naming tradition, built around real Great Houses and a documented Ashlander clan system rather than a single spider-cult. The two get confused constantly because both are commonly typed as "dark elf" in search boxes, but a Morrowind fan and a D&D player asking for a "dark elf name" want very different results. This page is built for the Dunmer side of that split, with lighter modes for drow, Warhammer, and generic dark-elf flavor folded in for completeness. If you land here wanting Underdark drow specifically, the link above will serve you better.
The Great Houses of Morrowind
Dunmer society outside the ash wastes runs on House membership. A Grand Council of five Great Houses has historically governed Morrowind, each with its own economy, army, and internal culture — and, tellingly, its own naming habits. Chronicles and in-world records tend to pair a Dunmer's given name directly with their House, the way legend remembers the hero-king Nerevar as "Nerevar Indoril." This generator does the same: pick a House and it pairs a fresh given name with that House's name.
| House | Culture | Known for |
|---|---|---|
| Hlaalu | Merchant-nobles, cosmopolitan and pragmatic | Trade deals with Imperials and outlanders, upward mobility by coin |
| Redoran | Warrior-aristocrats bound to honor | Ancestor worship, blade-and-shield tradition, the most conservative of the three playable Houses |
| Telvanni | Isolationist wizard-lords | Rule by raw magical power, mushroom-tower strongholds, meritocracy through spellcraft |
| Indoril | Devout, old-blood nobility | Closest ties to the Tribunal Temple, the most traditionalist House in lore |
| Dres | Plantation aristocracy of Deshaan | Saltrice agriculture, wealth built on a slaveholding economy in-lore |
Hlaalu, Redoran, and Telvanni are the three Houses a player can formally join in the game Morrowind; Indoril and Dres appear throughout the lore as the other two seats on the Grand Council, generally referenced rather than playable. Set the House filter above to flavor a name toward any of the five, or leave it on Any to roll across all of them, Ashlanders included.
Ashlander Clans — Life Outside the Houses
Not every Dunmer answers to a House. The Ashlanders are nomadic tribes who kept to the old ways — ancestor worship, prophecy, and a deep distrust of both the Great Houses and the Tribunal Temple those Houses built their legitimacy on. Four tribes are documented in the lore: the Ahemmusa, camped near the Bitter Coast; the Erabenimsun, the most hostile to outsiders; the Urshilaku, keepers of the prophecy naming a Nerevarine reborn; and the Zainab, settled in the Ashlands and somewhat more open to trade with city Dunmer.
Set the House filter to Ashlander and the generator drops the House surname entirely, tagging the result with a tribe instead — "Sedura, of the Urshilaku tribe" reads very differently on a character sheet than "Sedura Redoran," and that difference is the point. An Ashlander name should feel unclaimed by city politics.
How Dunmer Names Work
A Great House Dunmer name has two parts doing two different jobs.
The given name. Personal, built on Dunmer phonetic patterns — hard consonant openings (Dr, Ry, Ny, Vel) softened by vowel-heavy endings, especially for women. Names like Aryon, Fedris, Almalexia, or Barenziah follow this shape without being any of those specific canonical figures.
The House name. Inherited by affiliation rather than blood alone — outlanders can be adopted into a House, and a Dunmer expelled from one loses the name along with the privileges. It's less a family surname in the human sense and more a political membership card that happens to sit where a surname would.
Compare that to Ashlanders, who carry no House name at all — only a given name and a tribal affiliation — and to drow, whose given name and House name both come from an entirely different, apostrophe-heavy phonetic pool built around the Underdark rather than the ash wastes. Set the universe filter above to hear the difference directly.
Dark Elf Roles — Name Inspiration by Archetype
Set the role filter (TES universe) to lean a name toward one of five common Dunmer archetypes.
| Role | Who they are |
|---|---|
| Warrior | House guard or blade-for-hire, trained since childhood in a House's colors |
| Mage | Battlemage or hedge wizard, often chasing Telvanni-grade magical power |
| Priest | Clergy of the Tribunal Temple, or among Ashlanders, a keeper of the old rites |
| Noble | Council-blooded, born into House politics from the cradle |
| Outlander | Cut loose from House and Temple alike, surviving on wit and reputation alone |
Dark Elves Across Universes
"Dark elf" is really an umbrella term that four separate fictional traditions have all claimed for themselves. Switching the universe filter above moves the generator between them.
D&D drow. Underdark exiles ruled by priestesses of a spider goddess, phonetically built on apostrophes and liquid consonants (Zhaun, Vel'ryn). This page's drow-style mode gives you a quick taste; the Drow Name Generator is the deeper tool if that's specifically what you need.
Warhammer's dark elves. A colder, crueler take — sea-raiders from a frozen homeland built on slavery and worship of a murder-goddess, later renamed Daughters of Khaine in the tabletop game's own lore. This page's Warhammer-style mode nods to that harsh, hard-consonant tone with original names only — no published character or faction names appear in the output.
Norse Svartálfar. The oldest use of "dark elf" by far. The Prose Edda names them alongside — and sometimes interchangeably with — dwarves living underground, which is a much muddier origin than modern fantasy usually admits. Most of today's "elegant but sinister" dark-elf archetype is a later invention riding on that borrowed name.
Generic dark elf. For homebrew settings that want the vibe — cold, elegant, a little dangerous — without committing to any single canon's rules. This mode blends softened elvish phonetics with darker consonant clusters.
Famous Dunmer Characters and Their Names
These are documented Elder Scrolls figures, included only as lore examples — never reproduced by the generator itself.
| Character | Who they are |
|---|---|
| Vivec | One of the Tribunal, warrior-poet god-king and namesake of Morrowind's capital city |
| Almalexia | One of the Tribunal, goddess of the Temple's compassionate face |
| Sotha Sil | One of the Tribunal, the reclusive artificer-god |
| Nerevar | Legendary Chimer/Dunmer hero-king, remembered in lore as Nerevar Indoril |
| Barenziah | Dunmer queen and later Imperial Council figure, a recurring name across multiple TES games |
| Divayth Fyr | Ancient Telvanni wizard-lord who appears across several Elder Scrolls titles |
| Neloth | Telvanni sorcerer encountered in Skyrim's Solstheim expansion |
| Teldryn Sero | Mercenary companion recruitable in Skyrim's Windhelm and Solstheim content |

How to Use This Dark Elf Name Generator
Set the universe first — TES Dunmer, D&D drow-style, Warhammer-style, or generic — since it changes every other option's effect. For the TES universe, pick a House (or Ashlander), a gender, and a role to shape the tone. The House and role filters only affect TES results; the other three universes ignore them and roll a single-name style instead.
Use the slider to choose how many names to generate, hit Generate, and click any card to copy it to your clipboard. Each card shows a badge (House, tribe, or style) and a short description explaining who that name fits, so you get context along with the name itself. Not happy with a batch? Roll again — the pools are large enough to keep repeats rare even across a full party.
Tips for Players and Writers
- Pick the universe before anything else. A Dunmer noble and a drow priestess share the "dark elf" label but nothing else — decide which culture your character actually belongs to first.
- Match House to personality, not just flavor. A cutthroat merchant fits Hlaalu; a duty-bound blade fits Redoran; a power-hungry loner fits Telvanni.
- Ashlanders read as outsiders on purpose. Drop the House name entirely for a character who's meant to feel unclaimed by city politics.
- Say it out loud. Dunmer names should sound plausible next to Vivec or Almalexia without being either — read your result aloud before committing.
- For Skyrim-set stories, remember the Gray Quarter. A Windhelm-refugee Dunmer might carry a House name from a House that no longer holds power back home — that gap is a built-in story hook.
- Don't mix phonetics across universes. A Warhammer-style cold name and a Dunmer name shouldn't share a cast list unless the setting is deliberately crossing over.
- Use the role filter to cast a whole party. Roll a warrior, a mage, and a noble in sequence for an instant House retinue with distinct-feeling names.

Naming Conventions Across the TES Race Cluster
The Elder Scrolls give every race its own naming logic, and Dunmer sit closer to the Bretons than to the Khajiit or Argonians on the "human-shaped naming" end of that spectrum — a given name plus an affiliation, rather than a descriptive use-name. If you're populating a wider Tamriel cast, the Breton name generator covers the Nord-and-Cyrodilic-flavored human naming that sits right next to Dunmer culturally, while the Skyrim Nord name generator handles the clan-and-patronymic system of Dunmer's traditional northern rivals.
For races with a completely different naming logic, the Khajiit name generator runs on honorific prefixes tied to age and status, and the Argonian name generator builds descriptive Jel names that change with a person's deeds — worth a look if you're building out a full Tamriel party and want each race's names to feel genuinely distinct rather than reskinned versions of the same formula.
If your table needs the wider elven family beyond Tamriel, the high elf name generator and wood elf name generator cover the brighter, surface-dwelling side of the elven spectrum, and the D&D character name generator rounds out a mixed-race party in one place.
FAQ for Dark Elf Name Generator
Is 'dark elf' the same thing as 'drow'?
Not exactly — drow is D&D's specific dark-elf lore (Underdark, House Lolth, matriarchal spider-cult). "Dark elf" is the wider umbrella term, and in the Elder Scrolls games it means the Dunmer of Morrowind, a completely different culture with its own Great Houses, gods, and history. This generator covers the Dunmer angle plus lighter takes on drow and Warhammer-style dark elves; if you specifically want D&D's Underdark drow, our dedicated Drow Name Generator goes much deeper on that lore.
Why are Dunmer called dark elves?
Dunmer skin runs ashen grey to nearly black and their eyes glow red, a look Elder Scrolls lore ties to a curse laid on the ancient Chimer by the god Boethiah (or, in the Tribunal Temple's telling, by Azura) after they turned against their kin the Aldmer. "Dark elf" describes the look; "Dunmer" is what they call themselves in their own tongue.
What are the Great Houses of Morrowind?
Hlaalu, Redoran, Telvanni, Indoril, and Dres are the five Great Houses that historically govern Dunmer society, each running its own economy, army, and culture under a Grand Council. Three — Hlaalu, Redoran, and Telvanni — are the Houses players can join in the game Morrowind; Indoril and Dres exist in lore as the more traditionalist and more insular Houses, respectively.
What is an Ashlander in Elder Scrolls lore?
Ashlanders are Dunmer who never joined the Great House system. They live in nomadic tribal camps across Morrowind's ash wastes, following ancestor worship and old prophetic traditions the city Dunmer largely abandoned. The four documented tribes are the Ahemmusa, Erabenimsun, Urshilaku, and Zainab, each with its own war-chief and Wise Woman rather than a House councilor.
Do Dunmer have surnames?
Great House Dunmer are commonly known by a given name paired with their House affiliation — chronicles refer to figures like Nerevar Indoril the same way a modern reader would say "Nerevar of House Indoril." Ashlanders skip House surnames entirely and identify by tribe instead, which is why this generator tags Ashlander results with a tribe name rather than a House name.
What is a Warhammer dark elf?
Warhammer's dark elves (renamed Daughters of Khaine in later editions) are a separate fictional culture from a cold, sea-raiding homeland, built around cruelty, slavery, and worship of a murder-goddess. It's a harsher, more villainous take than either Dunmer or drow. This generator's Warhammer-style option nods to that cold, hard-consonant tone without reusing any published character or place name.
What are Svartálfar?
Svartálfar ("black elves") show up in the Prose Edda, an Old Norse source that also calls the same beings dökkálfar and, in the same breath, associates them with dwarves living underground — the two categories blur together in the original text. Modern fantasy's "dark elf" as a distinct, elegant-but-sinister race is a later invention that borrowed the name more than the source material's specifics.
Can I use these names in Skyrim or other TES fan fiction?
Yes. The given names are original syllable combinations built to sound like Morrowind and Skyrim's Dunmer naming pattern, paired with the real Great House names or Ashlander tribe names for authenticity. No canonical NPC names are reused, so results are safe for original characters, fan fiction, or tabletop conversions of the setting.
